Framing over niche size

Published thinking. Framing, packaging, retention.

A niche has no size until it is framed. The subject sets the vocabulary. The frame sets the audience.

Niche size is treated as a ceiling. It is not a ceiling. It is a description of who already knows the words. A channel about lathe restoration appears to address people who own lathes. That appearance is a product of the framing, not of the subject.

The same footage, addressed to a different question, addresses a different market. Nothing about the work changes. What changes is the stake the title makes available to someone who has never used the tool.

The rule holds across verticals. Sports, news, health, finance, technology, education — the subject supplies the vocabulary, the frame supplies the audience. A channel is run the same way in each: framing, packaging, production, retention.

The structure

A title carries two components. The specific thing, which establishes that the work is real. The general stake, which establishes why it matters to someone outside the subject. Most titles carry only the first.

The formula
The specific subject, stated plainly, plus the general question it settles.

Three examples, each a reframing of the same recorded material:

Narrow
Restoring a 1972 lathe.
Framed
The machines built to be repaired, and the ones built to be replaced.
Narrow
My bookbinding setup.
Framed
Why a book sewn by hand outlives a book that was glued.
Narrow
Three espresso baskets compared.
Framed
The part of an espresso machine that decides the cup.

In each case the specific subject is retained. Precision is what makes the general claim credible. A title that drops the specific becomes a category, and a category has no author.

Retention follows framing

A frame is a promise about what the next eight minutes settle. Where a viewer leaves is usually the point at which the material stops answering the question the title asked. That departure was designed at the title stage, before a frame was shot.

This is why packaging is not applied after production. The question is chosen first, and the edit is built to close it.

What this changes

A channel with a small addressable subject and a wide frame reaches a market. A channel with a large addressable subject and a narrow frame reaches a niche. The second case is more common, and it is read as a ceiling.

The niche was never the ceiling. The frame was. Post production holds the last part of the promise: colour, sound and motion graded to the standard the claim implies.
